Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology Brian Yuliarto encourages the establishment of a Council of Engineers.
He made the request when he received a visit from the board of the Indonesian Engineers Association (PII) at the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (Kemdiktisaintek) office, Jakarta, Monday (24/2). During the visit, both parties discussed strategic steps to advance higher education, science and technology in Indonesia.
In addition, the visit also introduced the PII management for the 2024-2027 term, including PII Chairman Ilham Akbar Habibie, PII Deputy Chairman Agus Taufik Mulyono, PII Secretary General Teguh Haryanto, and PII Treasurer General Hilmi Panigoro.
Heru Dewanto in the discussion hoped that the Minister of Research and Technology, Brian Yuliarto, would encourage the establishment of the Engineer Council, which has long been initiated. So far, Heru continued, PII's performance is not legitimate because the Board of Engineers has not been formed.
“PII can contribute to the industrialization and downstream segment. We hope that the Minister will encourage the formation of the Engineer Council so that our work in the future has a strong legal basis,” Heru said.
In response, Brian asked the Director General of Science and Technology of the Ministry of Education and Science and Technology Ahmad Najib Burhani to form a study team that will formulate the stages needed to strengthen PII's existence.
“I hope the study team will involve PII as well. Then, we will bring the results to the government for approval. We will optimize the existing potentials and synergize them. The output supports President Prabowo's Asta Cita idea,” said Brian.
Furthermore, Brian hopes that PII will encourage pairing between the industrial world and the world of research. This means that the industrial world is encouraged to work with universities that have research results. So that the results of research from universities can be utilized by the industrial world to support economic growth in Indonesia.
“We must move to create future jobs by future skills, the types of jobs that will emerge in the future as a consequence of the development of research and technology. Thus, we also prepare competencies that are relevant to these future jobs,” said Brian.
Meanwhile, Chairperson of the PII Expert Council Hetifah Sjaifudian, who participated in the meeting, believes that the future job by future skill initiated by Minister Brian Yuliarto is a concrete form of connectivity between the world of research and the world of higher education.
