Indonesian Solar Energy Research Center (ISEREC) and E20: Lead Indonesia Towards a Global Clean Energy Future

In an effort to support the green energy transition and overcome global challenges related to climate change, Indonesia launched the Indonesia Solar Energy Research Center (ISEREC) at the PUPR Ministry Auditorium, Jakarta, Wednesday (2/10).

ISEREC is a collaborative platform for innovation, research and development in the field of solar photovoltaic (PV) technology, which is an important pillar in supporting the energy transition in Indonesia as well as global efforts to deal with climate change. ISEREC was founded as a collaboration between the Solar Energy Research Institute of Singapore (SERIS) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Indonesian Engineers Association (PII), two leading institutions committed to advancing renewable energy research. In addition, as a solar energy research center which is fully supported by E20 (Engineering 20), a collaborative group proposed by the Indonesian Engineers Association (PII) to be part of the G20.

ISEREC was also built on the basis of strategic cooperation between various well-known research institutions and universities in Indonesia, such as the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), University of Indonesia (UI), and the National Research Agency (BRIN), and supported by the Solar Energy Research Institute of Singapore (SERIS). This collaboration aims to develop innovative photovoltaic (PV) technology, from solar cells to modular systems that can be widely applied in various industries.

E20: From Research to Real Solutions
E20 is an important initiative from Indonesia which was first introduced when this country hosted the G20 in 2022.

This group is not only focused on imaging alone, but is designed to produce real collaboration in addressing global issues, including the green energy transition, digital transformation and health.
In the E20 platform, engineers are not only involved in development technology, but also directed to become leaders who are able to make concrete contributions in facing global economic, environmental and health challenges. Through E20, Indonesia is committed to playing an active role in creating innovative solutions for climate change, energy efficiency and digital applications in various sectors.

ISEREC CO-CEO Prof. Michael Goutama, Department of Commerce and Industry Ali Murtopo Simbolon gave a speech before launching the Indonesia Solar Energy Research Center (ISEREC) PII and Engineering (E20) in Jakarta, Wednesday (2/10/ 2024).

ISEREC: Building the Future of Renewable Energy
As one of the concrete steps of the E20 initiative, ISEREC is present as a research center that focuses on the development of solar energy. The center will leverage support from various international institutions, including Singapore's SERIS, to drive innovation in PV technology. This collaboration involves various parties, both local and international, ranging from universities, companies, to non-governmental organizations.

ISEREC will make a major contribution to developing Indonesia's capacity in the field of PV technology, both in terms of research and production. Apart from that, this research center will also support local companies in increasing their solar energy technology manufacturing capabilities, so that Indonesia can become a major player in the global renewable energy industry.

There are 3 objectives of ISEREC.

First, in the education sector, namely by collaborating with universities and global research institutions to support PhD and post-doctoral programs in solar cell technology, student and lecturer exchanges, as well as joint professional development programs.

Second. The technology sector is building an Indonesian research team that is competent in PV technology, as well as supporting domestic industry to develop manufacturing capabilities.

Finally, there is consultation by providing consultative support to companies and institutions related to the development and application of PV technology.

With the launch of ISEREC, Indonesia not only shows its commitment to the clean energy transition, but also strengthens its position as a leader in renewable energy technology innovation. ISEREC, together with E20, will be an important platform in creating a significant global impact in facing various energy and environmental challenges in the future.

Global Support for ISEREC
Collaboration between Indonesia and Singapore through SERIS is expected to produce technology that can be widely applied, both domestically and in international markets. Support from many countries, including China, shows the global community's confidence in Indonesia's potential to lead the change towards green energy.

This research center will also play an important role in accelerating the development of solar energy in Indonesia, reducing dependence on fossil fuels, and opening up new opportunities for domestic industry to develop in the field of renewable energy. In this way, ISEREC will not only be a research center, but also a driving force for the future of sustainable energy in Indonesia and the world.

“We are very enthusiastic about being part of the Green Corridor project and the first semiconductor solar cell research center. With the launch of ISEREC, Indonesia begins its semiconductor ecosystem journey. This inauguration proves the power of network collaboration and the effectiveness of real innovation based on the digital twin model. "ISEREC's success is based on the belief that it will generate substantial value to drive efforts to develop Indonesia's Human Resources through the creation of an action-based industrial ecosystem, skilled employment, and a pool of relevant and competitive knowledge," said PII Chairman Danis Sumadilaga.
