Salam Insinyur

Mengenang Profesor Satari

In Memoriam: Professor Satari

Maybe his name is not as famous as Professor Andi Hakim Nasution, but the services of Professor Ahmad Memed Satari are very significant in agricultural development in Indonesia, mainly through research and education.

During served as Rector of Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), from 1970 to 1978, he did a lot of monumental things, among which is to establish and implement 4 years curriculum for undergraduate program in 1972 (although the conceptor of the program is Professor Andi Hakim), which is currently followed by all universities in Indonesia. In addition, he also established the first graduate school in Indonesia in 1975, which was then followed by a doctoral program in 1978.

Besides registered as a member in 1957, he also received an award from the Institution of Engineer – Indonesia (PII) in the field of Agricultural Engineering. Ha also received various awards, both from within and outside the country. Among them is a reward of Pahala Alma of IPB, Medal of Development of the Government of the Republic of Indonesia, Commandeur in de Leopolds Order of Belgium, an award from the USDA in the field of Soil and Water Conservation, Honorary President of the International Sago Development Center – Japan, and an award from the University of Cendrawasih as a pioneer sago researcher.

In his tenure at IPB, he was very supportive of student activities, both academic and non-academic activities. In fact he gave permission for students to conduct anti-Suharto demonstrations on Baranangsiang campus in 1978, although the campus was ‘besieged’ by the army. On this policy, in their news, BBC London stated: “It has been a new opponent, Professor Satari of IPB.”

About engineers and engineering, in a book, Professor Satari had stated that the engineers’ way of thinking must emulate the way of B.J. Habibie’s. “If the others, including me, were spent long time at the university in the field of education and B.J. Habibie in the field of industry. And, that’s what he wanted to apply, professionalism in the industry with technological knowledge as an engineer and a scientist combined. He is a scientist, engineer and manager,” he said. He added that since the first time, technology transfer is not main priority. We always want new ways, but do not know how. Until now, the technology transfer process from outside is not going well.

He was born on March 13, 1933. Getting an engineering degree from the Department of Forestry, University of Indonesia (UI) in Bogor in 1958. Then the Master of Forestry degree from Oregon State University in 1961, and a Doctorate (PhD) in the field of Soil Science from Michigan State University in 1967. He was appointed as professor of Soil Science at IPB in 1970.

During his life, he was also appointed in various positions including Chairman of the Center of Excellence (UI, IPB, ITB, UGM, and Unair), Member of the National Research Council (DRN), Advisor to Deputy Minister of Food Production, and Secretary of State Minister for Population and Environment.

On Monday, March 4, 2016, Professor Satari has left us at the age of 83. But the works and thoughts will remain and continue to encourage the engineers to work and give the best for Indonesia.
